What is Mastic Gum?

I developed significant bloating and discomfort during our recent travel to Athens, Greece and wanted something to help the discomfort. I came across a drink that contains Mastica and was intrigued because I knew of it’s benefits for H pylori, but I did not know it came in multiple forms! It turns out the Greeks use Mastica or Mastiha for many ailments.

If you are curious about learning more, here is what I learned!

What is Mastic Gum?

Mastic gum is a resin collected from the mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus), and has been cherished for its medicinal properties and aromatic qualities for thousands of years. It comes from the Greek island of Chios, and has been used in traditional medicine, cooking, and even in religious ceremonies. Personally, I have used Mastic gum to help clients successfully reverse symptoms of H pylori, but it also has many other uses.

How is it harvested?

Mastic gum is harvested from the bark of the mastic tree. Small cuts are made in the tree bark, allowing the resin to ooze out and harden into translucent, tear-shaped droplets. These droplets can be collected and used in many different ways. It can be used in chewable tablets, chewing gum, drinks, lozenges, and more. It has a unique flavor and aroma.

Health Benefits of Mastic Gum

Digestive Health

I personally love and use Mastic Gum to optimize digestive health. It has been traditionally used to alleviate gastrointestinal disorders, such as indigestion, stomach aches, and peptic ulcers. Research suggests that mastic gum may help reduce symptoms of gastritis and decrease the growth of Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium associated with the development of ulcers. I have found this to be true with one on one clients.

Oral Health

Mastic gum has natural antibacterial properties that make it effective in promoting oral health. Chewing mastic gum can help reduce plaque formation, freshen breath, and combat bacteria responsible for tooth decay and gum disease. As a natural alternative to synthetic gums, it offers a chemical-free option for maintaining oral hygiene.

Anti-inflammatory and Antioxidant Properties

The resin contains compounds with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which help protect the body from oxidative stress and inflammation. These properties make mastic gum beneficial in managing conditions associated with chronic inflammation, such as arthritis and heart disease. By reducing oxidative damage, mastic gum supports overall health and well-being.

Respiratory Health

Mastic gum has been used traditionally to support respiratory health. Its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties can help soothe symptoms of respiratory conditions such as asthma and bronchitis. By promoting healthier airways, mastic gum can improve breathing and reduce the frequency of respiratory infections.

Skin Health

Mastic gum's antioxidant properties also extend to skin health. It is used in cosmetics and skincare products for its ability to enhance skin elasticity and reduce signs of aging. Additionally, its anti-inflammatory effects can help soothe irritated skin and promote a clear complexion.

How I am personally using Mastic gum:

I purchased local chewable tablets and will place to take two twice a day for two weeks to see if it helps reduce the bloating I am experiencing. I typically struggle with GI issues when we travel due to the stress and exposure to new foods. This is one I plan to keep on hand in the future! I am used the chewable tablets by Mastiha, however a brand I would recommend from the states would be Mastica by the Allergy Research Group.

Conclusion

Mastic gum has a wide range of health benefits, and it holds a revered place in both traditional and modern medicine. Whether used to support digestive health, promote oral hygiene, or enhance skin appearance, this natural resin offers a wide range of applications.
